The grapes only served to make simple homemade wines. The region woke up after World War II, when beach tourism moved from the Adriatic Sea to Tuscany. However, it was the success of their Winegrowers that brought the region out of its lethargy.
Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto are some of the best wines in the world. Part of the select club of “supertoscanos” that were born at the beginning of the decade of the 70s, when Piero Antinori invented the Tignanello. Instead of betting on the Sangiovese grape variety, the most abundant in Tuscany, Antinori created a completely new wine.
The Great Wines of Bolgheri pointed to the gourmets the way to the southwestern end of Tuscany, a region that offers visitors something more than vineyards, Pleasant Hills and medieval cities: the sea. From Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, the beach is only a quarter of an hour away.
From Bolgheri castle you can see the sea at the bottom of Cypress Avenue. Sandy beaches of several kilometers extend between towns where small spas, bars and restaurants are attached to each other.
More beautiful than the coarse sandy beaches near Bolgheri are the fine white sand beaches south of San Vincenzo. This small town is the maritime center of the region with its hundreds of sailing and motor yachts.
